The Smug Soles Co believe sustainability should come as standard, not as an inconvenient add-on for companies. We do our best to offer the most sustainable options we can, whilst still ensuring you have a great experience.
The leather
The leather in your kits comes from reliable, sustainable tanneries where all environmental rules and regulations are met. If you choose chrome leather for your kit, it will come from suppliers who are endeavouring to replace the toxic chemicals they use in the tanning process, for more environmentally friendly water based alternatives. If you choose vegetable tanned leather, you can be sure it has been produced in an environmentally friendly way.
Initially I wanted to only supply vegetable tanned or industrial waste leather for the kits. But vegetable tanned leather can be stiffer and more difficult to work with. This is something I can work with in the workshops, because I’m there to help you out. But I want the kits to be as user friendly as possible and for you ultimately to make a wearable pair of sandals that you’re proud of. I’ve done my absolute best to find a supplier I trust are doing their best too.
Packaging
The kits are packaged in entirely recyclable cardboard packaging. Even the tape is compostable. Once you’ve recycled the outer sleeve, you can even throw the box and inserts in the compost because the screen print is done with plant based inks.
Glue
I was thrilled when I found a water based glue that claims to be strong enough to keep your soles on. But after lots of product testing it just wasn’t up to the task. I was really disappointed. But one thing I quickly realised is that it’s better to make a product that lasts a long time, than a product with better eco credentials on paper that only lasts a matter of months. I want your sandals to be your comfy go-to summer footwear, the ones where you don’t worry your sole is going to drop off!
